From local projects to global challenges, we aim to have an enduring impact on the communities where we live and do business. Below are just a few examples of the ways we're embedding philanthropy with talent enablement and making a difference.

Changing the world

We’re helping communities around the world break the cycle of hunger and poverty with our one-of-a-kind partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP). Created in 2012, the partnership focuses on the transformational power of school meals, which can help improve children’s health, cognitive development, access to education, and future lifetime earnings.

Since 2015, our employees have traveled with the WFP on four-week missions to analyze the economic return on investments in school meals – helping local governments better understand the long-term benefits created for children and the economy. To date, employees have completed missions in 18 countries such as Bolivia, Cambodia, Ghana, Indonesia, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and Uganda. The analyses have demonstrated that each dollar invested in school meals brings up to $10 in economic return.

Transforming lives

Philanthropy is one way we develop well-rounded, purpose-driven leaders, so there is a philanthropic component embedded in our leadership development programs and in the development of our college and MBA graduates. Our Leadership Vanguard program enables employees to join industry colleagues to collaborate on global solutions. Employees can also join other like-minded thinkers to build moral leadership and principled decision making through our partnership with The HOW Institute.

Advancing STEM

Girls4Tech? is our signature education program that showcases our payments technology and engages our employees as role models and mentors—all with the goal to inspire a career in science, technology, engineering and math. Since the program’s launch in 2014, we’ve reached more than 407,000 girls in 25 countries. Read more about our program.

Teaching tomorrow's business leaders

Mastercard funds Junior Achievement (JA) in many regions around the world. In addition, several members of our senior leadership team serve on JA boards. For the past 12 years, more than 5,000 employees in the St. Louis and New York areas have volunteered, teaching more than 80,000 students in grades K-8.

NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) and Mastercard have joined forces since 2010, inspiring students to dream-up, develop and launch their own businesses in the U.S., Mexico and China.

Our employees make a difference

Sharing our expertise

Through our partnership with American Corporate Partners, more than 170 employees have helped veterans return to civilian life in the U.S. and we're helping disabled students join the workforce through Disability:In's mentorship program.

Making it global

Our employees band together to be a global Force for Good in the month of May. In 2018, more than 70 volunteer events were organized across 19 countries with 6,251 volunteer hours contributed to local charities.

Being there in times of disaster

In times of need, we respond by contributing to aid short-term and long-term relief and recovery. During Hurricanes Harvey and Florence in the U.S., we also sent teams of employees to aid the Red Cross to provide disaster-response support.

Making it personal

Our employees can use one to five Community Days to give back in their local community in a way that's meaningful to them. They also take advantage of our Volunteer Incentive Program to give one to four $500 grants to the nonprofit organizations that they are most passionate about. In addition, our employees can participate in our generous 1:1 Matching Gifts program, where Mastercard matches eligible employee donations up to $15,000 a year. To further encourage our employees to give back, we host the annual CEO Force for Good Awards, where we honor the best of the best in employee volunteering.
